About the Friends of the Harris Garden

The Friends of the Harris Garden were formed in 1987 to support the garden and offer a social events programme.

Our weekly volunteers provide essential maintenance in the garden working with the head gardener, Pete Tipping. We help fund redevelopment work in partnership with the University.

The Friends have provided some of the major features in the garden including the stream, the Crab apple trees and the main path now suitable for wheelchair access. Planting for the new herbaceous borders, meadow bulbs, the red border and the gravel garden.

We have a social events programme for Friends including an events programme of winter talks and summer garden visits for members.

We invite local charities to hold monthly Open Days in summer.

Friends receive a quarterly newsletter, Grass Roots.

The Committee which runs the Friends’ activities is elected each year at the Annual General Meeting, normally held in May.

Everyone, whether a member or not, is welcome at Open Days and volunteering! (more information about volunteering here)
