Gardener's Diary - May/June
We have been planting, starting with a few shrubs. The Wollemi
pine is now planted and we have added another Magnolia to the
group next to the Turkey oaks. We have also planted two Mulberries,
one black and one white at the far end of the Cornfield meadow;
and several herbaceous plants to fill in gaps along the stream.
The Sciadopitys (Japanese Umbrella Pine) which was in a pot
in the walled garden has now been planted out on the Autumn
bank, and a Cedar donated by one of the Friends has been planted
in the middle of the Cherry circle. We’ve almost finished
planting out the half–hardy annuals grown under glass,
just the odd gap to fill in (Every time I weed I create another
gap!)
A few weeks ago we sowed all the Hardy annual seed and herbs
so we are now watching and waiting to see what comes up, and
hoping the weeds don’t beat the poor seedlings to it –
the weeds are growing very strongly at the moment in this wet,
mild weather.
Other jobs include weeding and mowing everything and everywhere.
Unfortunately, my third year students have just finished but
a few of the Friends are still helping me so I haven’t
disappeared under the work-load just yet.
The formal garden is has been emptied and replanted with Alyssum
and Marigolds with dot plants of Cordyline australis linked
by a line of dark blue and purple. I have grown Heliotrope for
this but they are still very small so I may initially plant
some dark Nicotiana between them. Like most of my bedding schemes
they are a bit hit and miss when grown from seed as sometimes
the plants don’t perform as expected so I’m afraid
we’ll just have to wait and see what it looks like!
