Head Gardener's Diary - June
We
have now planted out all the Half-Hardy annuals and they are
looking quite good at the entrance. They have had a few heavy
showers to water them in but the rain has also slowed down planting
in some other areas. We still have the formal garden to finish
off; we had to wait for the plants to grow in the glasshouse
as the Begonias initially sown for this area did not germinate
- out of 1500 seeds we only got 180 plants, which would have
looked a little bit sparse! Anyway, that should be done next
week and the vegetables and medicinal plants in the walled garden
continue to be planted as required. We have planted up the jungle
walk and the Dahlia bed so those areas are also complete. When
the Digitalis in the entrance area finish flowering we will
replace them with some summer bedding.
Our next task is lots more weeding as this
has been neglected while we have been busy with planting out
and keeping the edging and mowing up to date. I’d like
to thank our volunteers again as without them the stream,
mixed border and Iris bed would be nothing but weeds by now,
whereas they all look quite good due to the attention they
have received while we have been busy.
The Cornfield Meadow in the centre of the garden
is starting to flower better this year. There are a lot of
poppies already in bloom and the cornflowers along both outside
edges are also starting to flower. We will cut down the meadow
in front of this in the next few weeks so it will be much
more visible for the rest of the summer. We will also be flailing
the areas which contain the Spring bulbs as these have now
finished flowering and most of them have died down.
Its brightening up outside following very heavy
showers this morning so I must get back out there and continue
my long list of “things-to-do-today”, before
it becomes my list of “things-I-should-have-done -today
-but-ran-out-of-time -(again)!”
